In our Celebrating Team Tropical series, we commemorate our employees’ work anniversaries by getting to know them and their role at Tropical better. Meet Angela who is one of the owners of Tropical Foods and is celebrating 25 YEARS with the company.
My parents founded Tropical Foods in 1977 and I officially joined the company 25 years ago. I’ve worked in many different positions, starting in outside sales at our Atlanta office. I then came to our corporate headquarters in Charlotte and worked in the marketing department before moving up to sales manager. Also helped to build the HR department and was dubbed “The Queen of the Culture”. As one of the owners of Tropical Foods, I work across departments to ensure the company’s success.
I like to work with people, especially outward focused to the customer.
The work we did to define more about who we are and wanted to be – our values, vision and mission statements. It’s hard to have a team if you don’t start with some commonality.
I definitely have a lot of special memories working alongside my mom and dad. I really enjoyed the days before all the computers and emails. I liked the personal interactions, getting orders and walking them down to shipping while talking to people along the way. Automation is a great thing, but it’s nice to still take time for the personal connections. One of my most memorable days was seeing everyone come together after 9/11 and hang flags from the building.
I’d like to see some reinvention and rejuvenation to our core business. Also more progress to make the company a fun place to work while keeping the family feel.
I would be a medical doctor.
My dad is an obvious one and Mother Teresa would also be one.
I loved ballet, tap and horseback riding as a kid. I studied in Seville, Spain in 1983-84. I ran the marine corp marathon in 1985 and a mini triathlon in 1990.
